Spring IDF: Conroe

When Intel started off the Intel Developer Forum on March 7th, they announced an entire new line of processors based on their new micro-architecture, so say good bye to NetBurst. Initially Anandtech was given an hour to review a Conroe 2.66GHz system and compare it to a 2.8GHz FX-60 system and Conroe cleaned house with a minimum of a 20% performance increase. Click HERE for the benchmarks. Besides the sheer performance numbers coming from this new chip, this chip brings new life to the market where once again Intel and AMD will be swinging at each other with new, innovative designs and price cuts that benefit the end user.

Many people are saying this will bring the market back to when Intel had the performance crown and AMD offered lower prices and plenty of headroom for the overclocker, and I personally would love to see this happen. It looks like Intel’s new 65nanometer chips are a force to reckon with and unless AMD has some tricks up there sleeve with DDR2 optimizations of the K8 platform, Intel will be the performance king for some time to come. First Dothan, then Yonah, and now Conroe, these chips are just getting better and better.
