Tech Growth

I haven’t had much time in the last day or so to write anything, but there has been some interesting financial news that has come about this week.. In general the Tech Industry is on the rise and people are buying up MP3 players and laptops as if desktops and CD players are going out of style. Here is a bit of news from this week.

The Big Apple

When I walk around my college campus, protruding from nearly every set of ears are a pair of Apple ear buds. In every class I go to, one third of the laptops that sit on the students desks are Macs. When I walk into my library, there is an entire section of dual and quad core G5’s with their wide screens just waiting to do some video editing and 3D modeling. It is no small wonder when Apple reports that their profits increased 41% for 2Q compared to last years 2Q. Apple also has reported that they have sold over 8.5 million iPods and 1.1 million iMacs in 2Q. If you are interested in working for Apple, they just announced that they will be building a 50 acre campus out in California, I am sure they will at least need some new janitors if you can’t cut it in the computer stuff. This complex should hold between 3,000 and 3,500 employees, so get in line guys.

The Intel-igent giant

If you have been living under a huge rock for the last 6 months or so, then you have missed the frenzy of chip releases from Intel. The Pentium M Dothans that were pulling crazy clocks and 3D numbers back in 2005 have met their match with the new Yonah chips. Core Duo and Solo have taken the world by storm with Apple being one of the main consumers. Unfortunately Intel has reported a loss in profit of 38% over last years 1Q profits, citing competition with AMD and a general decline in computer purchases. However, don’t let this bit of bad news get you under the weather, Apple will be releasing a 17″ MacBook Pro in the coming weeks and a generic 13″ MacBook will be releasing in a month or so sporting a Core Duo at 2.0 GHz. While this means more profits for Apple, each MacBook sold means 1 more Intel chip on the market, plus 1 more Intel chipset, which in turn means more profit. While I am usually pro-AMD, I believe Intel has AMD whipped on the mobile front, and soon to be the desktop front. The competition will be good for the consumer either way.

Mozilla and Co

Just a week ago, Firefox 1.5.0.2 released featuring universal binaries for support on Intel Macs, and now Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 has released, patching up many security holes but no universal binary, sorry Mac users. I don’t believe I can say anymore than I already have that Firefox is the way to go, coupled with Thunderbird you have an unbeatable combination.

Personal News

After the extensive overclocking I put my processor through with the Phase Change, it has become unstable. I believe that last run at 3287MHz at 1.8 volts is what did it in, just another chip marked for early retirement. I have started up a wordpress.com account and I’ll be working on tweaking it and then linking it from here, so if you are interested in that, check back in a few days. I am cooking up another article, split between two topics, so check back in a day or two in regards to that. One last thing, I purchased Mint last night and have been thoroughly enjoying its services, if you run a website and like to look at graphs and numbers, I highly suggest checking it out. That is all, hope I haven’t bored you, I can’t build phase coolers every day of the week, thanks for reading.
