Happy New Years

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

I should have announced a few days back that I was on a sort of holiday vacation but I am hoping that you guys caught on after I stopped writing a week back or more. I’ve spent the time making a list of new ideas along with hacking together a new design so 2007 should be exciting. Since 2006 is about to become part of the past I just thought I’d pay my respects and show a few highlights of what 2006 meant to me. Yeah this isn’t Tech news, a product review, or even remotely on topic for this place but I’m on vacation.

Christmas and New Years

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

For a large portion of the world Christmas has come and past but for America Christmas eve has just ended and Christmas day has started. I just got back from a little Christmas party and we had a gift exchange and I lucked out and got a bath towel! The great thing is that I actually needed another bath towel, you can never have too many bath towels or socks for that matter. But besides the bath towel, the fun part was the exchanging of gifts and the consumption of dangerous amounts of delicious food. Christmas is a great time to shake the piggy bank and go out and buy unusual presents for family and friends. A perfect example would be the bar mitzvah card my brother and I bought for my parents as a Christmas card. We found it hilarious as the picture on the front was funny, hopefully I won’t offend any Jews with my use of a bar mitzvah card as a Christmas card. Either way that is just the start of a lot of useless and funny gifts that will be exchanged over the next day. I haven’t got any bits of wisdom as I myself am terribly lacking in wisdom but I do wish everyone a Merry Christmas and I hope you don’t spend these holidays alone. Happy Holidays everyone and have a safe New Years. Make sure to grab someone before the clock strikes 12, don’t want to be left alone there either.

Facebook isn’t phased by Big Checks

Friday, December 15th, 2006

Apparently Yahoo has set it’s sights on Facebook but they may be courting a brick wall. According to Facebook board member Peter Thiel, Facebook will remain an independent company unlike many other companies that have sold out to larger corporations, namely YouTube and MySpace. From the look of things, Yahoo was willing to pay $1 billion to acquire Facebook and Facebook flat out turned them down. To be honest I believe that to stay independent Facebook will retain what makes it Facebook, it’s ability to act on it’s own and not have the commercial interests of a larger organization telling it how to monetize the site.

Post-Finals Week

Friday, December 15th, 2006

Finals are behind me and the results won’t be in for another 4 days so until then I’ll be pacing back and forth. Every semester it seems like I am put through an academic hell only to survive so hopefully the same will occur this year. Tomorrow I’ll be going to the airport to welcome Meagan home after having been gone for 7 months so this weekend will be entirely filled with story telling and I can’t wait to hear the stories she has to tell. Last night I finished construction on the third version of my phase cooling design, this one is even more compact and hopefully I can insulate and isolate all noises so that it will be a unit for 24/7 use. The compressor is a bit noisy when running under extreme vacuum so it might not have the best temperatures but it sure will hold an enormous load, I’m looking at roughly 200-225 watts at -35 celsius if I can have my way with it. I could run it cooler at around -50 to -45 celsius but it would only be able to handle about 150 watts and my Core 2 Duo will be pushing out considerably more watts of heat. Once I get my Fluke 16 and I have perfected my mounting mechanism I’ll post my results, I’m looking for breaking a 100% overclock and possibly a 4 GHz 24/7 operating speed, maybe even higher if I can keep it well insulated and tuned. Now that finals week is over I’ll get back to the ~daily dose of technology news, information, and observations. First up will be another bout with processor power consumption as I have the tools to make my own readings now.

Finals Week and Pre-Christmas Presents

Monday, December 11th, 2006

If you noticed the slowdown of posts lately, don’t be TOO alarmed, it is only Finals week at Georgia Tech. I’ve been cramming my little brain with knowledge since Friday and I just had my first bout today and I think I did pretty well. Now I am leaking knowledge like a sieve until I begin cramming again tomorrow for my last final on Thursday. Hopefully all will go well and I’ll pass all my classes but my DSP(digital signal processing) class looks like it has joined the Titanic at the bottom of the sea.

Sub-Zero Ambient Overclocking

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Today I received in the mail my Scythe Ninja heatsink and the weather has been cooperating and has brought down the ambient temperature to ~0 celsius, in fact at 10pm tonight it will be -4 celsius outside with a dew point of -13 celsius. I don’t know about you guys, but to me that spells perfect overclocking weather, all condensation will immediately turn to ice and with a little bit of dry ice to help things along it could be a very exciting night. I know it is a friday night but this weekend will probably be the only time it’ll be this cold in Atlanta and I’ll have free time. I’ll have a flavorful post in a few hours if the weather holds out.

Review: Core Temp

Thursday, December 7th, 2006

I love programs that make my life simpler and easier and Core Temp has been a fantastic program that has done just that. Whenever you are overclocking one of the most important vitals that you must monitor is the core temperatures on your processor. In the past I was forced to use a slew of various programs as not all motherboards were supported by various programs and some boards gave skewed results but that has been fixed with Core Temp. I’ve been using Core Temp for the last couple of months and I have been really impressed with how simple and lightweight it is.

The End of the World… of Warcraft

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

After avoiding the game since the original beta testing which I participated in, I am back and I am ready to cause some complete destruction. Within most video games I can be compared to Shiva, Destroyer of Worlds. I will literally take a game, spend a few hours playing it, master the gameplay, destroy the competition, and then move on. During the beta testing for WoW I did precisely this and within a week I had become bored with the game as it offered the same continuous mind-dulling experience grind that I had hoped to escape from playing the dreaded Everquest. Now that the World of Warcraft has had some time to mature and grow I have decided to make a brief return to the fictitious world of orcs and humans and see if I still have the touch.
