From China With Love Lead

A shoddy knock-off of the James Bond movie? Ironically a knock-off movie would most likely come from China however this time around I’m talking about products manufactured in China. Before I was even born lead had been recognized as a toxic substance and for the most part had been removed from every product utilizing it including bullets (we stepped it up and went to depleted uranium!). From what I hear lead was used in nearly everything including gasoline and most notably paint. The remark “Must have ate too many paint chips as a child” refers to lead poisoning showing just how much common knowledge this issue has been in the past. I’ve always enjoyed playing around with lead due to how dense and malleable it is but then again I take extreme precautions to keep from ingesting lead. Little children aren’t as aware of their environment and what can hurt them so everyone else watches out for their safety. Who-Sucks.com has compiled a rather lengthy list of items that have been recalled due to some sort of life-threatening aspect about them and I’m shocked at the amount that feature “contains dangerous amounts of lead”. Here’s a few good ones that I wonder how they got off the docks in California.

  • “115,000 Claudia Jublot children’s rings, which were sold at Big Lots stores, were recalled because they contained dangerous levels of lead.”
  • “Kidsite jewelry sets, which were sold at Kmart stores across America, were recalled for containing high levels of lead.”
  • “Imported Chinese bracelets that were sold under the “Ultra Gear” brand were recalled because they contained high levels of lead.”
  • “About 280,000 children’s Rachael Rose Kidz rings were recalled after they were found to contain high levels of lead.”
  • “Children’s necklaces sold at Accessories Palace were recalled because they contained high levels of lead.”
  • “About 47,000 children’s mood necklace imported from China by Rhode Island Novelty were recalled for containing high levels of lead.”
  • “A&A Global Industries issued a recall for about 4 million of its Children’s Groovy Grabber Bracelets, which were painted with paint that contained high levels of lead.”
  • “Dollar General Merchandising recalled about 400,000 Chinese-manufactured Keychains because they contained high levels of lead.”

I’d say that’s enough examples and that just shows a few of the jewelery items that contained lead. While a few of the flammable objects I found to be rather funny such as “Vivre Royal was forced to recall a set of Chinese-produced candles when it came to light that their exterior coating and decorations were highly flammable” but for the most part I’m shocked at how little care there was in regards to checking these products before throwing them on the shelves. I understand that China is undergoing an industrial revolution in a short span of time but seriously get with the program. Maybe this is all a conspiracy by the Chinese to damage the next generation of Americans with lead poisoning? Maybe aliens do exist!

Those of us who work in lead poisoning awareness have been voicing this complaint for awhile now. Lead is not just in jewerly from China, however the list of recalled children’s jewelry is very very long. It has also been found in toys our children love: Little Tykes had cute animal flashlights with lead, Disney had hats & sunglass sets, Target sold a baby crib a couple years ago, and more widely known recently, was the ever so popular Thomas The Trains. These items are not just sold at Dollar Generals. They are sold at Target, Wal Mart, Toys R Us, Discovery Toys………all places most parents feel safe buying their children’s toys from. A child DIED from lead poisoning after ingesting a charm that Reebok gave away with their shoes. My biggest issue is why does the public not understand this issue or take it seriously. Thank you for posting this in regards to jewelry. Hopefully, one person will listen and prevent a child from harm.
