Is 802.11n the Bane of Gigabit Networks?

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

I’ve read my fair share of articles discussing the new 802.11n standard and the implications it’ll have on bridging the gap between wired gigabit and wireless connections. Typically in the past for enterprise level networks wireless connections haven’t been a reliable option due to their slow transfer rates, sluggish latencies, and limited range. Will 802.11n be able to counter these previous flaws in wireless technology?

A quick update

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Yay Classes, boo lack of time. I’ve been slammed for the last couple of days but just thought I’d drop a line here. BioShock is an amazing game, played the demo and now I’m waiting for 2K games to fix all the small issues such as the Field of View issue and the Securom issues. Lots of ATi GPU rumors are floating around, sounds like the 2900XT will be getting some neighbors in the lineup with a 2900GT and 2900Pro launching and then closely followed by a 2950Pro and 2950XT. The 2900GT and 2900Pro will be 256-bit cards with unknown amounts of stream processors, the 2950Pro will simply be a die-shrink of the 2900(R600) core. Hopefully these new “upper-midrange” chips will provide decent cost/performance ratios as currently there is nothing from the DX10 camp worth looking at besides the 320MB 8800GTS. Today is the 30th anniversary of the NASA Voyager program, those twin probes are still flying about roughly 9 billion miles from the sun and still putting down 1 million miles a day or ~42,000 MPH. DamnInteresting.com had a slightly related (rockets, probes, close right?) post about rocket transported mail, if you want an interesting 5 minute read then check it out. I just got Photoshop installed on my laptop and I’ve set up a little repository for all my prototype designs, soon this place will get a nice facelift as I make time in my unusually busy weekdays. That is all, back to hacking up C code. edit:just noticed that my CSS makes the asides ENORMOUS

BioShock

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

Need I say more? I hadn’t really heard much of this game until it seemed like the entire gaming section of the Internet blew up with glowing reviews of this game. Now after being bombarded with dozens of previews and reviews I have to say the game is growing on me and I haven’t even fired a demo up yet. I love video games for the ability to do what I cannot do normally without serious legal ramifications. Don’t know if that’s a proper reason to like video games but they are usually a fun way to blow stuff up, rampage through cities, and send thousands of robots/soldiers to their doom. BioShock looks to cover a lot of this interests of mine and I found a perfect video clip that illustrates these interests with great examples. I’m going to read a bit more into this game and see if it’s worth purchasing and if so you’ll see a Review up here. I just hope the PC version has slightly higher details than those exhibited in the video below as they look a bit dated to me. Guess I’ll have to purchase the game to find out.

It’s Hot

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Making this brief as it is unbearable in my room right now. Yesterday I came back to the house around 5pm and the AC was off. My room was up past 100F with just my single computer + sun warming up the sealed room. This is a shot of the thermostat on the shaded side of the house right now. Suffice to say it feels better outside with the breeze than inside right now. Discovered that freezing a moist t-shirt absolutely rocks when the AC is out.

RIAA Doesn’t Want to Pay Bills?

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

The RIAA is best known for being a thorn in the side of the people. Honestly I know they serve some sort of purpose but for the life of me I couldn’t tell you what it is.. They seem to just selectively choose a few individuals, suck them dry, and try to keep everyone else in check through fear. Naturally then it tickles me whenever I see someone stick it right back at them, reminds me of when you see a mosquito sucking blood from your arm and you get the chance to turn it into a little red splat and flick it’s carcass off into the distance. Take that RIAA mosquito’s! Anywho, this entire little rant is brought forth by this little article on Slashdot in which the RIAA is being forced to pay $68,685 in attorney fees for a defendant in an unsuccessful terror trial. Glad to see someone having the chance to “stick it to the man” even if it’s only $68k, least they are partially compensated for the nightmare the RIAA tried to pull over on them.

I’m a Raccoon

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

Not in the klepto sense but in the facial marking sense. I went out to Road Atlanta yesterday for the NASA Hotlanta Challenge where my dad was racing his 94 Z28 Camaro out on the track and I forgot to apply any form of sunscreen. Suffice to say 9 hours out on the track with just my clothing and Oakley’s protecting me created some very interesting tan lines. (more…)

The RAMSAN Series, Ultimate SSD for I/O Applications

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Got a huge SQL database and tired of your hard drive array bogging you down with “slow” I/O operations? Tired of having a mountain of cash and want to turn it into a small humming steel box? Just like owning the fastest hardware available? Well look no further as I believe I have found one of the wonders of the computing world, Texas Memory Systems’ RamSan series of SSD drives. If I were operating something that required massive amounts of bandwidth, miniscule latency issues, and money wasn’t an issue then Texas Memory Systems would have my cash as fast as I could swipe the card. Just looking at the spec sheets for their various units makes me smile, hope you get the same feeling.

Apple Releases New iMacs

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

I believe this may be the first time I have ever looked at Apple hardware and actually wanted to touch it through the screen. I myself had never been a huge fan of Apple “desktops” with their lack of upgrades, typically expensive markups, and their reliance on mobile hardware but this latest round of iMac’s feature such a crisp design that I’m able to turn a blind eye towards the hardware limitations. Besides the iMacs themselves though, the new keyboards are beautiful works of art. Perhaps later this week I’ll go to Lennox to look at the keyboards. Now the question is, does it come in black?
