OnStar to Help Police Thwart Car Thieves

Just began adding feeds to my new RSS reader (I know, I’m behind the times) and I caught this interesting article on c|net about OnStar’s new Stolen Vehicle Slowdown. I personally don’t own a car* but I know that one of my biggest fears was someone driving off with my beloved vehicle and never seeing it again. Even though insurance could pay back the street value for the car that rarely covers the sentimental one has for their car unless of course you are looking to get rid of it in the first place. Even though this service could be very helpful I never have been a fan of being tracked, accidentally or purposely. However, if losing a little bit of privacy could help me get my car back then that might just be a price I’m willing to pay. Unfortunately, with OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Slowdown there will be a monthly fee which may deter some potential users from purchasing this service. What I don’t understand about this service is that rarely will a car be stolen, and if it is I doubt it’ll be stolen very often. If you are already charging for OnStar service then this should just be an additional feature rather than a premium service. Perhaps this is why I don’t run a multi-person business? All opinions aside Stolen Vehicle Slowdown could prove to be very useful during highspeed chases and general recovery of a stolen car. SVS will be available in OnStar equipped 2009 GM vehicles, someone buy one and park it in a shady part of town and report back.

I think this is cool, even though you don’t like to be “tracked”. It’s interesting, too; given a few years, I’d bet that even the lesser-informed thieves will know which cars have these features and which don’t, thus providing a further deterrent to steal.

On a lighter note, I’m in your feed reader!

I suppose it will be a deterrent, it’s safe to say you don’t want to carjack a GM vehicle that’s a 2009 or beyond. Sucks for the rest of us people with unprotected cars, now we become the targets =D

You’ve always been in my feed reader! Well.. if my feed reader was the list of sites I’d check once a week. Now I’ll get updates as they happen, woohoo!
