Spoons from Spuds

This is a bit of offbeat news but I thought it could use a bit of attention with it being the end of blog action day and all(correction, was yesterday but I forgot to publish this). Just think of all the times you’ve used plastic forks, spoons, knives and plates or styrofoam plates and cups in the last year. Each of those plastic utensils will never decompose naturally and the styrofoam has a lifetime measured in hundreds of years. For those of us that love alternative options over plastic utensils and plates but want the characteristics of plastic there is no need to fret anymore! Potato and corn starch utensils, cups, and plates have been available for a while and judging from the pictures they look to be rather indistinguishable from your generic plastic parts while being a great green choice for your large events.

Starch-based Cutlery from Vegware

As you can see in the image above, those utensils look like great substitutes for plastic cutlery. While I wouldn’t suggest purchasing these over traditional steel cutlery for daily dining, starch based utensils would be great for fastfood restaurants and large events where steel utensils aren’t economically feasible. From what I have read these utensils will biodegrade in roughly 180 days but can last much longer if kept in a cool dry place. Has anyone purchased or used these utensils and had any observations of their use? I’d love to know if they are indistinguishable from plastic cutlery or if they have an odd texture or feel to them. Would you like some ketchup with your Spudware?

If you are interested in purchasing some starch based products, Treecycle in the United States and Vegware in the United Kingdom can take care of all your starchy desires. Thanks to Vegware for use of their cutlery images.
