Daylight Saving Time May Confuse Windows XP
10.28.07 - 02:13pm
No! I’ve been working on a paper that I have due tomorrow and I glanced at the clock on my Windows XP installation and I noticed it said 5:07 PM. I thought to myself “awesome, I have more time than I thought I did” but then I looked over at my Macbook and OS X was saying it was 6:07 PM. My cellphone says it’s 6:07 PM. What gives? Well apparently Daylight Savings Time has been extended to November 4th, 2007 till 2 AM rather than October 28th, 2007, at 2 AM. While I just noticed this discrepancy, it would have been terrible if I didn’t notice it till tomorrow as it would make me late for a few events. I don’t know if this is just an error with my particular installation, but take note. Manually forcing Windows to synchronize with Time.Windows.com also doesn’t fix the issue, sounds like a Microsoft issue. Back to writing my paper and pretending it’s 5 PM instead of 6 PM.
I just checked the one remaining XP machine in my house and the time is correct. You must have missed a Window Update somewhere.
Hmm quite possible. The funny thing though is that when I force it to synchronize the time it still reports the wrong time. One would think with it synchronizing with a central time server it wouldn’t make a goof like this, oh well. I blame the Bush administration for changing DST.
I believe that when you synchronize with a server like that it returns GMT time not adjusted for anything. Your computer does the calculations on what that time is based off of your time zone and the status of daylight savings. That might be why you computer does not change.
Valid assumption there also Austin. I’m a hardware/overclocking guy and didn’t think too deeply into it. Just thought it was a funny point, got to imitate Nelson, point at Windows, and go “Ha Ha”. I did however not adjust the time and almost submitted a homework assignment late last night, would have been great trying to explain to my professor why my homework submission was an hour late.
You need to be sure and install all the updates to Windows XP just you do on you MAC. If you missed the update you will not get the one that includes the changed DST calendar.
Maybe your not smart enough to use Windows?
You must be new and definitely took my reporting of this the wrong way. My windows XP installation typically runs 14-16 processes and sips under 70MB of ram when I’m benching but because I’m not smart enough to use Windows I have no idea how I do all these things… I purposely don’t auto-patch Windows as a lot of the garbage for countering viri and patching security holes aren’t a concern when I use the installation for high performance benching and gaming. If you are going to accuse somebody of being stupid make sure you choose a stupid target first. Now get back to trolling the net like a good little boy. God I hope that isn’t your real name either.. *giggle*
There is *a lot* of garbage that gets installed with Windows updates - I adhere to the same policy of not auto installing every little thing Microcock throws at me. Unfortunately I have the same issue… incorrect date/time. Now I have to work out which patch it is…
