Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Destined for OS X

Sounds like id will be covering all bases with a final launch of Quake Wars on OS X that will be brought forth by Aspyr Media. Earlier last month id launched the Linux version of Quake Wars and from the sounds of things the OS X distribution will be available relatively soon as it has entered Alpha testing. According to AppleInsinder the game plays rather well albeit with some limitations such as no current multiplayer support or support for the current features such as VoIP and the performance optimizations that are present in the Windows version. Now the only issue here will be the actual hardware, Mac’s have never been optimal gaming platforms as design tends to supersede performance as is very obvious with the current lineup. AppleInsider mentions that Quake Wars runs rather stable with current hardware but I believe their concept of stable and pleasurable is 1280×1024 and minimal settings. The Mac Mini and Macbook feature Intel integrated graphics (GMA950 and GMAX3100) which are decent for past generation games like CounterStrike:Source on minimal settings but don’t imagine for a second they’ll play Quake Wars at anything faster than a slideshow. If you do plan on gaming on a Mac then either cutting the resolution down on the iMacs or opting for a Mac Pro with an X1900XT will be your only viable steps and even at that it is rather depressing. Apple needs to step up in this department and contract out an 8800GTS/GT/GTX for the Mac Pro and perhaps offer an 8800GT in the 24″ iMac. Anyways, all hardware grumbling aside, rejoice for one of maybe 3 titles ported over to OS X this year.
