AMD Launches HD3870 and HD3850 Graphic Cards

It’s GPU month here in the tech industry and this second product launch doesn’t quite measure up to the 8800GT launch earlier this month. The RV670 GPU which is the core used in the HD3870 and HD3850 cards is essentially a shrunken R600 core that forms the basis of the HD2900Pro and HD2900XT cards that flopped with great disappointment. As you can see from the chart below there is little to differentiate the two besides the memory and core speeds. While I haven’t seen much in regards to overclocking performance, I haven’t heard good things about the stock performance. It looks like RV670 is going to get kicked in the teeth by G92/8800GT through the holiday season BUT due to the short supply of 8800GTs it’s very possible for AMD to rake in some serious cash this season. Rumor has it that AMD has over 250,000 cards stockpiled for this launch compared to roughly 40,000 8800GTs that were available for it’s launch. I can’t say yet if RV670 will be a complete failure but judging from the initial results I’ll have to say snap up an 8800GT if you are searching for a card in the $250 price bracket.
