New Year’s Resolutions

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

New Year’s resolutions are typically goals that individuals set with little chance of accomplishing them. They also tend to focus around general self improvement like “drop 10 pounds” or “stop drinking soda” but rarely do they focus on long-term self improvement. I myself have come to a fork in life and at this point I’m realizing that I should have put less focus on short-term goals and payouts and extended my view into the long-term future. So, what precisely is my goal and how do I plan on accomplishing it. Well..

New Design in Progress

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Notice anything different? Well if you are viewing this through the RSS feed then I’d ask you to hop over to Gomeler.com and take a look around. I’m currently in the process of refreshing the website as it’s been nearly a year with the “k3″ theme. Currently it’s just the default Wordpress theme with a few things hacked together, so bear with me. Figure it might take me a week or two to create the final theme but unlike past redesigns, this will be a work in progress. Spent a good portion of the day dusting off the cobwebs but I finally got something working that is halfway acceptable. Another update will occur in roughly two days, if things go according to plan.

Back from Vacation

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

I’m back, refreshed, and ready to have a little fun. Have a few chores I need to knock out first like building up my new domain but there will be some fresh piping-hot content pretty soon. Looks like Google has ignored me as I neglected the blog for a week, oh well. Hope everyone had a great Christmas, I know I sure did!

Are Laptop Computers Dying?

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

So I read through my roommate’s article, Are Desktop Computers Dying?, and thought a bit about it. Technology evangelists have been warning of the death of the desktop PC for years but it’s pretty certain that there is still a pretty steady demand for these bulky yet cheap platforms. Desktop sales may not be at the level of their dominance in the 1990’s but I’d say that a balance has been achieved. Those individuals that want a laptop have bought a laptop while those that prefer a desktop or both have purchased their own setups. So where do we stand now? Are laptops really going to replace desktops or is there a greater threat out there?

Second Generation DirectX 10 GPU Analysis

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Looking back over the last 12 months I’ve got to say I’m impressed with how far we have progressed, until I realize there hasn’t been a performance king GPU change in 12 months. The 8800GTX is still the leading performance card considering how the 8800 Ultra is simply a faster clocked 8800GTX. Besides this little nitpicky point, the midrange GPU selection has changed drastically and frankly it’s been a long time since we’ve had such a wide spectrum of cards available to the consumer. Thankfully AMD finally has a GPU product that is mildly competitive considering how the HD 2900XT/XTX cards were overpriced and underwhelming. If you are looking for advice on your next GPU then you have hit the right spot.

Review: Buffalo 2×1GB PC2-8000 Firestix

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

It seems to be very late in the DDR2 life cycle to be reviewing a set of high-end sticks considering however DDR2 will live on for at least another year in the enthusiast market so fear not, this review was not done in vain. DDR2 on Intel motherboards is still capable of performing within a very close margin of current DDR3 motherboards and AMD will be solely using DDR2 until late 2008/early 2009. Currently unless you have very deep pockets or an unlimited budget then high-end DDR3 is out of your price-range which leaves you with what some would consider to be old technology. I think however that when you see the results of the pinnacle of the DDR2 era you may be swayed if you were part of the previously mentioned concept. Without further ado, here’s the review of the Buffalo Technology PC2-8000 Firestix, clad in flashy red heatsinks.

Blog Milestones at Gomeler.com

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

It isn’t very often when I sit down and look over what I’ve accomplished in my life but I just had one of those experiences earlier today. I was told some unfortunate and potentially life changing news this morning after which I sort of had a moment where my life flashed before my eyes. I spent a little while this afternoon then listing all the things I had done in my life and realized I’d accomplished quite a bit but here I’d like to share one thing. People use various statistics to compare their success amongst each other and with blogging I’d have to say pageviews, RSS readership, posts, and comments are the numbers that really matter. Below is a listing of some of the various stats that I have available and what they mean to me.

Preview: Pirates of the Burning Sea

Monday, December 17th, 2007

I’m a MMORPG fiend, this is a given fact. I am also a Pirates of the Caribbean fanatic, so when you combine MMO’s with pirates I naturally get a bit rabid with desire. Pirates of the Burning Sea does a great job of satisfying most of my requirements for an MMO and I hope this review will properly expose all the unique traits of this oddball MMORPG. is currently under development by Flying Lab Software and will be published by Sony Online Entertainment, publisher of Everquest and Vanguard. PotBS will launch on January 22nd, 2007 but since December 5th the open beta has been underway. I myself have been playing through part of the closed beta and through most of the open beta so I hope I’ve got enough experience to give this game a proper preview.
