Wal-Mart Goes Blu

In an expected move, Wal-Mart has declared it will migrate exclusively to Blu-ray in the coming months. Wal-Mart, America’s largest retailer, will shift it’s 4,000 combined Wal-Marts and Sam’s Clubs from a mixed format to Blu-Ray exclusive over claims that they are responding to their customer desires and best interests at hand. Given the sheer size of Wal-Mart I’d have to say this is the killing blow to HD-DVD, if Netflix switching wasn’t. It saddens me to see HD-DVD go the way of Betamax but twin formats would never have worked. There’s only enough room in this town for one of them and the financially weaker one had to go. Stuffing Blu-Ray drives into the Playstation 3 was a gamble that paid off for Sony, I imagine they’ll also see a spike in sales as individuals that had been sitting on the fence will finally make their HD-format purchases. Farewell HD-DVD, you won my heart but not my wallet.
