Project Nissan 240SX: Day 6
05.16.08 - 08:47pm
Today wasn’t so much a day as more a culmination of a few days. I’m just now getting caught up on all my work so I’ve had time to give this project some attention. I spent a few hours today calling around searching for replacement engines and suffice to say the search wasn’t very positive. In a desperation move I went to a Pull A Part knowing full and well that all the cars there would be stripped to the bone. Finding 4 240SXs on record, I began browsing the yard. The first one was an empty shell, the second one had a rusted shortblock, the third was partially dismantled, but the fourth was in perfect condition. Judging from the large marker writing on the windows, the owner had just graduated college so I suspect he tossed the car in search of a better one. Great news for me but unfortunately the block had 240k miles on it.
You meet the strangest folk
While moping around one of the 240SX’s a guy walked up and asked me if I was looking for a block. I perked up, said yes, and he offered a KA24E for $140. I had originally wanted to upgrade to a DOHC engine but at this time I can take whatever I can get just to get this car running. On Monday or Tuesday I’ll go about picking up this block and maybe by next week I’ll have a running 240SX. Debating on whether or not I should pull the entire block apart or just change the fluids and dump it into the waiting shell. Perhaps I’ll tear the old block apart first so I have some experience before I damage the “new” block.
The Plan
Since my QX9650 has been away on RMA I’ve managed to get a lot of work done. However, I have a lot of money tied up in hardware that needs to be benched and sold so once that processor arrives I’ll have to bench for a good day or two. Hopefully this will let me free up some spare cash and then let me focus on the 240SX. My goal is a running 240SX by the end of this month, maybe next weekend!
