A Week’s Worth of Progress Post-Robbery
June 3rd, 2008 at 19:38 under Personal, Status.Woohoo! I think that just about summarizes my current emotions. It’s been one hectic week and I don’t think I’ve ever moved/coordinated/arranged/fixed so much stuff in such a short period of time. For the duration of the summer all my basic needs are taken care of, which is great news. I’m not going to lie, I’m still a bit skittish at times but I’m getting better. Doing my best at risk management also, no longer opening doors at 6am, not riding on public transportation with my benching equipment, and definitely not running late at night in sketch neighborhoods.
A Quick Summary
For those of you not familiar with what prompted this post, feel free to glance back at the previous post or read this quick summary. On Memorial Day my house was robbed by three young men early in the morning. One man knocked on my door and talked to me while the other two hid. Me, being the naive/nice guy I am, opened the door upon only seeing one individual. The three then rushed the door and one jumped on me while the other two started tossing my room. I proceeded to run up the staircase with the assailant on my back until I beat him off me and ran to get help. The robbers managed to nick my beloved black Macbook(with charger!) and my wallet. Thankfully I was able to get away, causing them to flee immediately as they were sitting on a goldmine.
Recovery
After this incident, my roommates and myself decided to move out. Paul Stamatiou headed out to a condo on 14th street, Matt headed home temporarily, and I moved into my fraternity on Georgia Tech’s campus. I still plan on doing my hardware reviews and extreme benching but I’ll be substituting dry ice and liquid nitrogen for my elaborate cascade cooling systems. Thankfully I’m taking classes online this semester so I can take my time in acquiring a new mobile computer. I don’t fancy doing this, but at the same time I need something mobile.
ChipIn!
Due to overwhelming popularity, I’ve settled upon utilizing ChipIn to setup an online fund for a new laptop. To be honest I’m not a huge fan of receiving handouts, I’d rather strap my LCD and desktop to my backpack with a 12v car battery to power the ensemble but I imagine people would object. Due to having a limited budget and a slew of pretty objects I desire, I’m shopping around on Craigslist for a Macbook or Macbook Pro still under AppleCare and in great condition. If I can find a great deal on Craigslist then I’ll jump on that, otherwise I’ll be going through with Apple’s Back To School program with a free iPod Touch. This iPod Touch would naturally be sold off to further reduce the cost of the laptop, same thing I did with my old Macbook. So I’ve set a deadline of August to make a decision and I’ve opened up a ChipIn account for those of you who wish to donate to the Macbook Fund. If you donate $0 I would feel just as good, all the positive comments I’ve received helped more than money could.
Upcoming Stuff
I liquidated a large quantity of gear to fund a K|ngp|n F1EE liquid nitrogen pot. Since I no longer can use my cascades I’ve been forced to make the jump to LN2. This is probably a good thing as it’ll let me push the boundaries even further but at the same time it’s going to increase my operating/benching costs. It also looks like I’ll be going to LA at least once this summer, can’t really state any details as frankly, I don’t know any! Once I’ve got my F1EE I’ll be doing some 8800GT SLI benching, have a good chance at slapping some records silly a la HD3850. I also start my new job as a valet tomorrow, hopefully I’ll have a fun day of work. Have a bit more to write tonight, glad to be tied back into the Internet. Computex is going on and it’s all so very exciting.

I felt bad that no one contributed to your fund yet, so I started it off with $5. I would have donated more but my paypal is running low. Good luck mate!

Thanks for the donation Anthony! I didn’t expect anyone to donate and still don’t expect anyone to donate. Positive comments were always enough =)

Perhaps you should investigate renter’s insurance…or a policy just for your macbook (maybe a rider on your parents’ homeowner insurance policy)?
Good luck!
