Atlanta Overclockers Club/Meet/Thing

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

So this is sort of what I’ve been working on lately. Inspired by some of the great overclocking legends of the past and present, I’ve decided to attempt to professionalize this hobby of mine. Living in Atlanta, I figured with a few million people within a day’s drive there must be a few people interested in meeting up to bench some hardware and my search has yielded some results. I have registered AtlantaOverclockers.com which will eventually become our accomplishment log and launch-point and I sure hope this goes somewhere. I apologize for being a bit slack around here but rather than simply dip my toe into the CCNA material I’ve decided to plunge headfirst and it’s been a shock to say the least. I’ve never felt so un-prepared for something, even those Calculus III tests and finals pale in comparison but it’s a great feeling. It’s humbling being schooled by a book, if it and I had conversations it would be straight from The Karate Kid. I’ve got some more hardware coming in for some reviews so fear not as the future is bright but first I must take care of financial business. Even overclocking gurus must work so tomorrow I’ll be trawling Atlanta in search of a sweet secondary job to bank up some funds for my upcoming trip to California. After briefly discussing it with Paul, we’re almost certain we’ll be making a Spring Break trip to California which will be a well-timed trip for some networking. Well that is all, happy Valentine’s day readers, here’s my date.

EVGA 8400GS Volt Modification and Overclocking

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Title says it all. I decided to pull out the meek 8400GS for a little fun along while competing in a little competitive event over at XtremeSystems. I originally purchased this card for when I’m benching to reduce the load on my powersupply in hopes of pulling a few more MHz out of the processor. I however just couldn’t resist overclocking this card so in the original review I managed to pull 600MHz out of the core and 415MHz out of the memory. Considering the stock clocks of 459MHz on the core and 400MHz on the memory, it overclocked moderately well for a $30 card.

Gigabyte Overclocking Contest

Friday, January 18th, 2008

I’ve been a bit busy the last couple of days and I haven’t had enough time to post but the pressure is finally off. About two weeks ago I was informed of an overclocking contest sponsored by Gigabyte. The contest was based around the 3DMark 2006 CPU test score and limited to Gigabyte motherboards utilizing the P35 and X38 chipsets. Ten days ago I ordered a Gigabyte X38-DS4 in hopes of using my Q6600 and my cascade to secure a prize in the contest. Three days ago the board still hadn’t arrived and the top X38 position was taken by a QX9650. I knew I was out gunned with my Q6600, even though I was benching at 4850MHz. To make matters worse, I was informed yesterday that my motherboard’s box had multiple labels and was being returned to Newegg to be re-shipped. Going from competitive to dead on the starting line wasn’t a happy feeling so after a little bit of pacing I formulated a plan. It would require a lot of driving, a lot of patience, and a bucket load of luck.

Review: MSI P35 Neo2-FR Under Cascade

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Yesterday I had the chance to test this motherboard under some sub-ambient cooling and I was blown away. I’ve got a high-end board arriving later this week so I figured I’d go out in the garage and check up on the cascade and tune it for the Q6600. After a slight delay in which I had to repair a small leak on the suction-line, I vacuumed down the second stage and put a rough 50/50 charge of propane and carbon dioxide into the system and fired it up. Rather than test on a load-tester, I dragged out the Neo2-FR, Q6600, Firestix, and fired the system up. This was more of a cascade test rather than hardware test but the results were great. The cascade idled around -70C, loaded around -60C, and only drooped under -60C while running wPrime1024m which utilizes all four cores.

HWBot.org Takes Over My Life

Monday, January 29th, 2007

My name is Chris Morrell and I am an addict. I just can’t turn down a good competition and I just recently discovered another arena in which I can compete. HWBot.org happens to be this particular arena and it is precisely what the overclocking scene has needed. HWBot.org is the closest thing besides XS.org in regards to an overclocking database but HWBot.org actually rewards users for difficult merits. HWBot.org is quickly growing with total number of teams pushing past 200 and 2403 registered users.

I Crush 4200MHz and More

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

I like to pretend that I am some sort of Super Hero when I sit down to do a benchmarking session. I guess benchmarking is one of the few things that you can do in which case only your tweaking talents matter. It is sort of like a chess-match and since I am terrible at chess, this is what I chose to excel in. Over the last 3 days I have spent countless hours insulating and tuning my newest single stage phase cooling device and the initial results were promising. Can anyone say -49 Celsius?

Lean Machine 2006 Part 3

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

The long delayed results for the Lean Machine are in. I apologize for the lengthy delay, thanks for sticking around. I’ve built some fast computers in the past and I’ve managed to push them even further but this particular machine bested all my previous records at stock speeds and then just demolished everything when I began overclocking it.

The Overclocking Addiction

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

People speak of overclocking all the time but rarely do people specify why they do it. I am sure there are some people that would love to overclock but the risks seem too great. Then there are those people out there that only know of overclocking as some underground computer scene. Since I am such an avid overclocker I have decided to share some of my passion with you in this unusually personal article.
