A Look into Vista Part I

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

I really haven’t spent a lot of time talking about Vista as Conroe has been on my mind but I decided to take a step back and give Vista a little bit of my attention. To some people Vista is just another bump in the operating system road but for others Vista is a new wave of thinking. Vista tries to fix all the problems that have plagued previous editions of Windows and it seems to do this rather well while being rolled up into a fancy package. I decided to install and play with all the Vista targeted programs that I could find which included Microsoft Word 2007, Windows Media Player 11, and Internet Explorer 7. This suite of programs will be what greets the world when Microsoft finally launches Vista so why not take an early peek?

File Compression Review

Saturday, July 8th, 2006

I love organization, especially in regards to my hard drives. I also maintain a digital library of every program I need to quickly get my desktop operational in case I decide to destroy Windows over 10 times in a week. However I like having all these files easily accessible so I stashed them on my server, but since it would be a pain to remember 25 file names and extensions, I conveniently RAR all of them and then have a rar.exe installer, so I just have memorize two files. Now what I am getting at here is the importance of archiving programs and the space they can save. Lately I have heard reports of 7-Zip actually being better than my trusted favorite WinRAR so I decided to put these two to the test and see who came out on top.

Hard Drive Partitions for Operating Systems and Gaming

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

I feel that I have neglected the gamer within me lately. This has mainly been due to this website consuming every spare second from my life. I did however have a chance to fire up a game of Serious Sam 2 the other day when I was severely stressed out and I noticed how terrible this game played on my machine. My desktop has been converted from a gaming machine to a web development and distributed computing machine so I have over 30 processes running with tons of crap running when I’m not even using it. Now there are multiple ways to go about fixing this issue and I am going to highlight my personal favorite, hard drive partitions.

Opera 9, Another Choice.

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

A little while back I wrote an article about Opera and how it could potentially be a Firefox replacement. Even though Opera had so many extra features compared to Firefox I still wasn’t impressed enough to make the switch from my beloved Firefox. Recent the Beta version of Flock was released to much acclaim and a great review was published by my friend Paul. With this new wave of browsers the average internet user has some great browsers to choose from with each offering different features that really benefit certain niches. No matter what though I can guarantee that you are better off using any browser besides Internet Explorer with its track record in regards to hackers.

How To: Sidebar.php

Monday, June 19th, 2006

I’ve had a few people ask me about my sidebar and how I managed to get the recent articles and comments to be viewable for every page. Since PHP is just like every other language on the planet, if you can understand the basics then you can do more than just hack it up like I’m about to show you. First let’s cover the article plug on every page.

The Black Macbook and Boot Camp

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

I did it. I caved. I bought a Macbook. Yes, you heard me correctly, the Mac zealot hating PC overclocking nut has finally caved in to Apple and their Macbook. I started off the day by buying a set of Oakleys and figured while I am at it, I might as well buy a Macbook. Since the Apple store at Lennox was only a block away from Phipps Plaza, my mother and I jumped in the car and headed on over. For the entire 5 minutes in the car and 10 minutes of walking I was like a little kid on crack.

An Introduction to BitTorrent Clients Part 2

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

A month ago I performed a comparison between Azureus and uTorrent that tried to answer the question of which client is better. If you read it you would have noticed that I came to the conclusion that both clients were about equal with Azureus having more features while uTorrent consumed less resources. When I performed that test I only tested by downloading a 3GB Linux ISO with an older computer with only 512MB of ram. This time around I plan on testing 3 different files, and then running both programs simultaneously and separately. Hopefully this will be thorough enough to satisfy you, the reader, yet not be an information overload.

Distributed Computing and You

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

I hate it when I waste resources. Letting the water run while I brush my teeth, leaving the door open when the air conditioner is on, and leaving my computer idle all bother me. The first two examples probably seem very obvious as to what is being wasted, but what about the third? Do you see it? For most computers, from the moment you turn it on the processor is churning away at a specified frequency. No matter what is going on, that processor of yours is running full tilt, computing nothing. This is what bothers me, processors computing nothing, this is both electricity and computing capacity being wasted. Now what if I told you that all these unused clock cycles could be used to help mankind? If that interests you, keep reading and maybe you’ll find a new competition to join.
